Peer Review Week 2022: Research Integrity

Kathryn Muehlberger, Client Communications Specialist

October 2022

The global event, Peer Review Week, returned in 2022 and took place from September 19th to the 23rd. This year’s theme was “Research Integrity: Creating and supporting trust in research.” Through virtual events and activities, various academic publishers, organizations, and researchers highlighted how the peer review process contributes and reinforces trust in scholarly publishing. Research integrity has been of utmost importance this year due to global issues, including climate change and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A few event highlights include:

• A blog post written by Adya Misra, Research Integrity and Inclusion Manager at SAGE Publishing, where she discussed critical steps researchers and authors should take to advocate for research integrity goals and prevent post-publication problems. Some of these steps include to: “Pre-specify your study protocol, agree on the author and group contributions, and check with an ethics committee for study approval.”

• An interview with Astrid Bowen, a PhD student at Birkbeck University of London, that discussed, from an early-career scientist’s perspective, how researchers can promote research integrity.

• A webinar with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) discussing the “Practical Steps for Managing Paper Mills.” The group provided insights for editors and publishers who want to learn more about paper mills and how they affect the publication process.

• A panel discussion moderated by Andrea Hayward, Community Manager of Cactus Communications, featuring the “human side” of the publication process. Various speakers led this conversation and shared their knowledge on what goes on in the minds of authors, reviewers, and journal editors that manage the peer review.

This is just a sneak peek of the dynamic events that the representatives for Peer Review Week curated to educate and engage participants. This year’s theme, “Research Integrity,” helped unite publishers, authors, and researchers around the importance of peer review to help increase trust in research.
